It was so cool to watch this unusual monument grow over us as we walked closer and closer. Almost all of the original casing stone remains on this pyramid and as the details of it construction became clear, we found out why.

The Bent Pyramid, was the second pyramid built by Sneferu, the founder of the Fourth dynasty of Egypt, reigning from around 2613 BC to 2589 BCE.

By casing the structure with long stones set so the facing is formed by the ends making it very difficult to mine into the pyramid and steal the casing.

You may notice that most of the removed stone are the long stones that have been broken off rather than pulled off the pyramid like all the other pyramids that have been completely plundered. This pyramid gives the best idea of the sparkling brilliance that the pyramids of Egypt had before their casings were stripped away.

The mortuary temple on the east side of the structure seems to have supported cult activity long into the Middle Kingdom even though it was probably not Sneferu’s burial place.
