COLLOSI OF AMENHOTEP III
— TUESDAY 15 JANUARY 2008 — LUXOR - WEST BANK, EGYPT — 18TH DYN. NEW KINGDOM —

Called by the Greeks, the Colossi of Memnon, these huge statues of Akhenaton’s father stand at the entrance to what once was his mortuary temple.

The northern statue would emit a hooting sound in early mornings.

They thought the sound was Memnon greeting his mother Eos, who responded by weeping over the tragic death of her son.
